Surely he does in the book (Snape isn't his true relative though). But in fanfiction hate and love are often quite close (and make a good story) :)

I first started to read of this pairing as the kind of curiosity, but soon realized if the fic is convinceing and well written you can find out they really can suit each other in some mysterious way ;) Angst between them makes fic more interesting.

So, they became my favourite pairing.
