  • Robert Ryan was a fine actor and far different in real life than the angry or racist tough guys he portrayed on screen. I agree that he'd have made a good Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers".

'Reactionary' John Wayne could overlook an actor's politics (unlike 1978 & tkilizzy). Despite their differences, Wayne requested Kirk Douglas in several movies, including "Cast A Giant Shadow" which Wayne & his son produced. Wayne was great in "The Searchers", "Red River", among others.

  • Wayne would be a real fool to let political differences of opinion stand in the way of having talented people work with him in films. And, whatever I think of him, I'd never say he was a fool when it came to career choices.

  • The truth is, I'd always disliked Wayne's acting & when I later discovered his personal politics it merely added grist to the mill of my dislike. But the reverse can also hold true. I'd always liked Ryan as an actor & when I later found out about his political views (which I admired & respected), this added to my liking of him. With someone like Ward Bond, I like him as an actor but despise his politics. So I don't think I necessarily act upon an actor's politics in my evaluation of them.

  • I can't help thinking that this magnificent actor should have taken the parts offered to that mediocre reactionary, John Wayne. A far better actor, more subtle and better looking,in fact better everything, he would have been a great Ethan in The Searchers, a film I love despite Wayne (not because of him). Robert Ryan, sir, you shall always be remembered and loved by the connoisseurs.

  • I couldn't agree more 1978Alexandra. Ryan is one of the finest actors ever and so much better than most of his contemporaries despite their bigger status as so-called movie icons... and that certainly includes the swaggering Mister Macho high-heeled wearing Wayne!

  • Thanks Fran and Maria! But don't kid yourselves... I'm doing this for purely selfish purposes. If anyone else enjoys my Mr. Ryan clips that's a delightful extra added bonus! I enjoyed using some more fun/romantic clips of Mr. Ryan for this one. He certainly COULD do comedy and romantic roles... he just didn't get the chance that often... there's lots I could say... but heck, I'll shut up and just try some more uploading and let Mr. Ryan speak for himself.

  • @livefortheday He was a great actor, my favorite. Only a pity he didn't get more important roles. If you get a chance see the movei Billy Budd and you'll see some great acting there as well.

  • @joeparkson

Neither Tikilizzy nor 1978Alexandra said they wouldn't watch a great film because Wayne starred in it. On the other hand, why shouldn't one draw attention to his reactionary politics (no quotation marks), his support of witch hunts? He obviously had friends who opposed Wayne's ideology (the great Kirk Douglas being one of them), but such associations did not inform his stance. Now, it pains me greatly that Gary Cooper too was a reactionary , but I wouldn't try to whitewash him.

  • UGH. This guy had sex appeal in goddamn droves. I was watching Crossfire today and even his entrance in that floored me. STUNNING CREATURE and a damn fine actor to boot.

  • I think R Ryan was WAAAAAAAAY better actor thatn Wayne. Wayne was a complete asshole as a person, while R Ryan was a VERY nice guy. Very very nice...

  • Well I guess that's why they make chocolate & vanilla. Everyone has different tastes. I though Wayne began as a bland young actor with no charisma and learned his craft well. IMO, he was spot on in "Trouble Along The Way", "Red River, "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon", "The Quiet Man", "The Searchers" & "In Harms Way". Then he seemed to phone it in until "The Shootist". "The Conqueror" & "Barbarian and The Geisha" were bad.

Funny thing is, I could also see Ryan in many of the Wayne roles.

  • What is the name of that movie in the very clip where Robert Ryan is shirtless?

Please read his biography by Franklin Jartlett-an excellent book on this complex, mysterious, and brillant man.
