I'd been on an R44 intro flight for an hour. This was the final leg. We were held up on the Northern approach to Newcastle International Airport, I decided to hover at 700ft, we normally do a 500ft orbit on the R22 but the R44 has a lot more power so it was nice (if a little strange) to high hover for a while.

We were facing West, into the wind. We then got our clearance to land so I headed over to land on the South side.

  • vortex ring more like there

  • Don't think so, what makes you think that?

  • high rate decent low airspeed powered flight! and on top of that all the signs of incipient entry airframe judder(bigtime) and random yawing! certainly looks like it to me!

  • I'm sorry but you really are talking bollocks there mate..! there was no rate of descent at all. We were in a very stable 700 foot hover awaiting clearance. Once clear, we turned left then gained airspeed and started approach. Granted, vortex ring is one thing to look out for when high hovering but this is miles away from what it's really like.

  • The "incipient entry airframe judder" you mention is a direct result of a dodgy camera mounting and is visible in many other videos I've shot in R22's and R44's, this will soon be sorted by mounting it on my headset instead.

  • Is he descending vertically at all?

    Nah.

  • u should learn how to hover taxi using forward attiude and the pedals rather than the rotor as the control at low speed u go go sideways like a crab! and at our airfeild in north england we orbit rather then hold in a hover at 700ft cause at that height that your just about out of the height velocity curve leaving no room for fuk ups kinna makes more sense?
