My very first cutaway at 1234th jump from my new (less than 10 jumps) Velocity-79.
Vector Micron w/ skyhook rig, PD Optimum-113 reserve.
Before cutaway I moved my head with side-mounted videocamera in front of risers for free space for cutaway & skyhook, reserve pull was not used. Main pull at 1200m, under functional reserve at 550m.

  • while everyone will have their own opinion, I don't know that there is a correct answer.. but my thought is as large of a reserve that I can fit into my container!.... for the times I will need it most (broken arm, collar bone, or AAD fire) I don't want to be flying a highly loaded 7-cell.. when I was jumping I had an exit weight of about 220, jumping a cobalt 120 1:1.8 loaded. with a tempo 170 reserve.. it had the same size packing volume as a PD143 which was the largest my J1 would hold.

  • @Cricket202

My exit weight is 172, so for me 113 isn't too small, considering Optimum is flying much better than Tempo and has real size bigger than tempo-120 because of different measuring methods.

  • whats the beeping sound?

  • @G3org3Master

First signal (really it's second, but first is not on video) is 1000m - time to deploy, second on video (really third), siren like, is 600m - time to cutaway, sounds if vertical speed is high enough.

  • too many people jumping tiny hi-perf mains and overloaded reserves. Go get a big reserve for exactly this reason. Line twists on a big, square reserve are generally not a huge deal. Line twists on an overloaded reserve can be...

  • @ljwobker

Reserve is Optimum-113 loaded at less than 1.6 - is it overloaded? Technically - no, it can handle more weight.

I don't agree with your opinion.

  • @Cricket202 what WL would you recommend on a reserve? what do you suggest the experienced guys who fly a small heavily loaded main when it comes to buying an adequate rig fitting a small main and a safe reserve?

  • Skyhooks super good !

  • @Sobakin76 you did all the right things.. and in good time.. so you get an A+ for that.. but YES your reserve is overloaded!! do you want to land a 7 cell loaded at 1.6:1 if you have a broken arm, or dislocated arm and can't flare it? or broken Femur (seen it happen) and have have to land that thing down wind with no flare? but you have over 1000 jumps..you're a big boy and lived this long.. reserve loaded at 1.6:1 would not be my recommendation for any one. blue 111s D-something

  • nice done

  • Oh, Borodianka...

  • and why what?

  • @skydiver626 yeah, statistics dont really pan out in favor of that argument...though i like to be rsl free

  • @crazysteve7777 and why?
