Wendell Wilberforce Baker was put on trial in 1999 for the brutal rape by sodomy of frail pensioner Hazel Backwell. A DNA link made him almost certainly the rapist but after a succession of rare legal loopholes, blunders and a technicality, Baker was acquitted. Not only that, since the last 12 years Baker has been protected by an anonymity order.
Because of the Double Jeopardy rule change in 2005 Baker can be retried for the rape by sodomy of Hazel Backwell and BBC lawyers persuaded the Lords to lift the anonymity order on Baker for the broadcast of this documentary.
A Mentorn Documentary broadcast by the BBC 30/07/09
