http://fatnews.com/ Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @ FatNews.com.
The bone-building drugs Fosamax (alendronate) and Actonel (risedronate) look like a disaster to me. I would avoid them like the plaque.

Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @ Fatnews.com

I say this based on a letter by Susan Ott, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.

Her area of expertise is bone metabolism.

Many people believe that these drugs [Fosamax and Actonel] are bone builders, but the evidence shows that they are actually bone hardeners.

[These drugs] deposit in the skeleton with a half-life of more than 10 years.

With continuous use, the drugs will accumulate [in the body].

It is possible that the bone will eventually become brittle or will be unable to repair microdamage.

One-year animal studies using doses 6 times higher than recommended for humans show decreased bone formation in both spine and ileum and increased numbers of microcracks.

  • Actonel just about killed me. I can't believe they are still prescribing it. The makers of this should be accountable and also the cold hearted doctors who dole it out like candy.

  • @yvonnahue Thanks for sharing your story.

  • Osteoporosis is not a disease, and it is certainly not life-threatening! It is merely a process of aging. The only concern about Osteo. has been with hip fractures in the elderly--but it turns out that only half the elderly who fracture their hips have osteoporosis! Dementia and Frailty have more to do with it. And the odds of breaking your hip when you're old is less than 5%.

So all these 50-yr-olds are taking these dangerous bisphosphonates for nothing! Do not trust Sally Field.

  • I say just use what nature intended. People should educate themselves about what they can do naturally to improve their bones
