allusions to the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Thomas Paine, Daphne du Maurier and Shakespeare; involves Captain Vaushnic, disfigured in the June 1914 attack on Archduke Ferdinand, who returns to the Manor Selby seeking aid for his peace-keeping efforts in Verdun, France during the height of World War I.
