- Prof. Ervin Laszlo talks about relating altruistically to all people like we are one family, and that through such a change in relationships, we can build a new, altruistic civilization.

  • "Whenever anyone wants others to do their work they call upon their Altruism. 'Never mind your own needs,' they say, 'Think of the needs of... of whoever. Of the state. Of the poor. Of the Army, of the King. Of God.' The list goes on and on. How many catastrophes were launched with the words 'Think of yourself?' It's the king and country crowd who light the torch of destruction."

  • "What is the greatest lie ever created, what is the most viscious obscenity ever perpatrated on mankind? Slavery? The Holocaust? Dictatorship? No. It's the tool with which all that wickedness is built- Altruism." - Andrew Ryan, BioShock

  • I'm seeing just under a minute of this, so I really don't know: When he talks about lesser evolved people, is he referring to race?

  • eh- o. your post was sort of awkwardly worded so i didnt quite get your gist. sorry

but i agree with your reply

  • Agreed- hence why all real human beings are objectivists :)

  • I know. What I mean is she is arguing if you want to help people, that's fine, but you shouldn't be forced to help people. It's the difference between charity and welfare. She was not against charity. She was against welfare.

  • @Nodrog666

no u miss her point. ayn rand was not promoting altrusim. in fact she argued against altruism & intrinsicists. The only real moral is to be truly selfish in other words to care about one's own self in a logical & reasonable fashion

  • uh- altruism is the greatest source of the greatest evils

  • Ayn Rand was quite right. You can help others, but it's not altruistic if you want to help others. Than it's intrinsically selfish, which is okay. Altruism has an element of bondage to it.

  • I think you are confused about the definitions of altruism and objectivism. When you exploit others you call upon that persons altruism. They put your needs in front of their own. If they went on objectivism themselves, they could not be exploited.

  • I hope you understand that the death of Andrew Ryan in Bioshock represents the rejection of his philosophy by the creators of the game...similarly the fallen state of Rapture shows the inability of a society built on those ideals to survive.
