  • @beavis6363 The Wankel was a rotary engine, but not the only rotary engine. The rotary engine was one of the most common engines of WWI. These engines spun with the propeller. The Wankel was a different kind of rotary engine. There were true radial engines used in WWI but they were not a dominant type as in the lower hp range the rotaries were more efficient. The modern replicas in the film are using radials but these are not authentic.

  • Wish for the modern shots they had used a modern replica with a rotary engine instead of replicas with radial engines. In the picture of Fokker and Richthofen examining the PUP you can

see the move the propeller and the engine follow the propeller which is a proper rotary.

  • 1:47, Incorrect! they used a "radial" engine, not a "rotary" engine. The rotary engine was invented by German engineer Felix Wankel. First patent for the engine in 1929, development in the early 1950s at NSU, completed working prototype in 1957. There is a significant difference.

  • Was this footage taken at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck NY The markings on the Triplane seem identical to one I'd seen fly there a few years ago. The view from aloft in the cockpit seems familiar too, as well as the row of buildings along the edge of the grass runway. Ah, that's flying. Wind in the wires singing their siren song and a full can of ammo for my blazing twin Vickers. Tally-ho!
