The environment has paid the ultimate price for the economy.
Over-allocation of water from the Murray Darling Basin has caused the demise of the RAMSAR listed Lower Lakes & Coorong in South Australia.
We now face the problem of acid sulphate soils in many wetland areas below Lock 1.
The lack of environmental flows from the Murray River to South Australia should never have been allowed to get this bad.
There is considerable misinformation about the history of the Lower Lakes & Coorong in the media. The website for Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation has a fact sheet on The Lower Murray Lakes & Coorong see www.dwlbc.sa.gov.au
"Prior to the regulation and diversion of the River, the Lakes were predominantly fresh only becoming brackish at times of extended low flows. Under natural conditions seawater only penetrated to Pont Sturt. Sharks were observed at Murray Bridge but this is common for some species to swim both ways in estuaries."
"Studies suggest that the Mouth did not close for at least 8,000 years. In 1981 the Mouth closed for the first time"
From the figures also supplied in the government pdf file.
Approx Median flows across the barrages to the Coorong from MDBC
2000-2001 4690 GL
2002-2008 1763 GL that is TOTAL for 6 years!!!!!!!
The Coorong is in crisis. Sure its full of water but it NEEDS fresh water too.

  • The problem stems from corporate governments, each level of GOV , local , state fedare are registered corporations with the securities and exchange commission in Washington DC (look it up) . What do corporations need "money" . It all began in the early eighties with the selling of our assets Telecom , E&WS etc. Water is deemed now as a commodity . Macquarie Bank is one of the giants purchasing water from private and public . This entity is registered in the Bahamas and pays NO TAX ?

  • Your comment was simply not approved. I am deeply concerned for the health of the Lower Lakes & Coorong. Too much water is taken from the system for irrigation with the environment paying the ultimate price...

  • If the river was allowed to flow the environment would be better off, no question about that, draining the river dry purely for farming irrigation??? Would think that with your channel name "Sustainable Solution"??? you would understand that current extraction from the RIver Murray is unsustainable...

  • I live in South Australia and i didn't know this was going on. These important issues are never on the news. It makes me sad and i cried watching this video. I have turtles of my own and it is just devastating.

What ways is there for me to help?

  • Once again another comment not worthy of publishing.

  • Theres no way the river can go back to its natural state, that would mean 100% of the river flow coming all downstream to us, don't see that happening anytime soon.

I suggest you do your research before commenting then maybe something can be published.

Sorry but I make no money & draw no water from the Murray, Goolwa gets its water from the Myponga reservoir which is not part of the MDB.

My concerns are purely environmental... I do question yours???

  • Too much water is taken from the environment for human use. The government is ultimately responsible for what environmental watering is done.

The Lower lakes would only become estuarine during low flow years and only for a short period. Without the barrages they would be hyper-saline to hyper-marine lakes which would never have been prior to the regulation & extraction of the river flow.

I'm sorry for your ignorance, but the River Murray does not end in Victoria...

  • Sorry no financial advantage here, I do quite a bit of environmental work and its all voluntary. I'm deeply concerned about the plants & wildlife & what is being left for future generations, I just want to see a fairer water allocation for the environment...

  • Lake Alexandrina & Lake Albert are natural lakes. South Australia is only receiving 10% of its allocation and other high security allocations interstate are also receiving water . So get your facts straight. You strike me as an interstate farmer who has no water who couldn't care less about the environment. I dont mind having discussion with you but would appreciate polite argument or I will have to block you.

  • Watching an internationally important wetland system dying is depressing. And then having to deal with ignorant people who have no regards for the environment, or the manners to converse politely...
