This is what I miss about game shows. Nowadays, all the game shows are big-money, prime time, polished productions. They almost never show anything that goes wrong, it's so highly edited that you lose all feeling of there being anything "real" about it.

I like how they took the time to explain this, when they could have thrown the game out and re-played thus, screwing over Gene's partner (forgot her name) which many shows would do, but this is so much more fair and it gives fans a little insight into producing TV.

Makes you wonder how Mr. Ludden would've handled this situation.

@Narrator007 Exactly!! Spot on. That's what I love about old game shows too!
-
The tape was erased? Are you sure that the puzzle wasn't about Richard Nixon?
-
@TyVulpine LOL, he was a famous TV actor before Match Game. Remember Hogan's Heroes of the 1960's?
-
I would have beaten him if I had more clue's? LOL!
-
@nocalsteve In fairness, keep in mind that because of the nature of the mistake, the explanation had to fill a precise amount of time. They had to stretch a little bit.
-
@WhatsAYak And it was seen again during Super Password, at the end of the Tournament of Champions.

I <3 Gene!

At 2:40, Gene is thinking, "Ohhhh whatever WINSTON".

@henrytvwhiz NBC probably had some of the most stringent standards in terms of game show integrity of the 3 networks. They probably had to go through all that to explain what happned. Ahh, but Ol' Tom, master of polish, makes it look all soooo fun.
Why didn't they just re-enact the entire erased segment before this episode went on the air?

The only thing I can figure is that the losing contestant from the game had already left the studio, and in a world without cell phones, they couldn't get to her.
