In 1986 whenb Apple Macintosh computers were black and white and PC's compiled numbers in Lotus 1-2-3, Allen Hastings showed a short film he created with his own software that would be known as Videoscape 3D for the Commodore Amiga. This 3D software would later evolve into Lightwave 3D, which is a leading 3D software that is used in television and film. Hastings' animation, crude by today's standards, demonstrated a new market for personal computers.

  • Hi Chuck, I got this video from an Aegis employee back in 1987 so I'm pretty sure this was the original music. Excuse the poor quality. The VHS collected dust for 20 years. I might get around to cleaning up the audio a bit (yes, I know it sounds horrible) and re-posting it.

I have a few other early Allen Hastings/Videoscape demos from that tape that I plan on posting soon including one that shows the bombing of Commodore's chief rival of that time.

  • @uploader.. Yep i hear ya, Its ashame when you hear all the talk of Apple/Mac's so called 'starting it all' in terms of graphics and animation. Fact is The Amiga's were Years ahead of any mac. In fact if you think about it, the older C64's were even far ahead of macs. Especially when you consider the C64 had a installableGUI mouse driven interface in the form of GEOS (which later became Windows) The history of home computers is mostly a lie. in favor of mac by people that dont have a clue.

  • Wow that looks amazing! Really impressive stuff.

  • The original music was Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" but Allen didn't like it and changed it to the music you hear in this clip.

  • Awesome. Great find.

  • Fantastic Demo. I would appreciate it very much if you were to clean the orignial tape and repost. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Hey, robewil I can help with cleaning the audio. The sound is from Alan Parson's Project "Eye In The Sky" (1982) I own the record on vinyl, want me to send the track to you? It sounds really clean on my disk :D Way better than a CD.

  • Nice! I remember there was a looping demo of videoscape 3d they showed on a commodore monitor in the window of the local computer shop, 24h.. i wonder if this was it
