BUSTED by Mall Security on the Freight elevator @ Northstar Mall

Let this video serve as a reminder to all my viewers as to what can happen when you are wandering around in places we are not supposed to be. As elevator photographers part of what we do is RESPECTING property owners' rights. If you see a no trespassing, Authorized personnel only, Employees only, Etc. We need to respect those signs. Property owners have the right to request you to stop photographic activities on their property, They also have the right to eject you If you don't comply. If you are a minor, they have the right to detain you and turn you over to your legal guardian (your parents) and inform them of what you were doing. If you are caught in a "restricted area" such as a back room or service corridor you can be ejected on the spot and possibly given a trespass order not to come back. Good people skills are the key to making any confrontation go well. I have had several "busts" and they all go pretty well.

Now for the story.

After I stopped the camera, I shut the door and took the security guard up to 2 and on the way up he radio'd his boss saying "I found a customer in the freight elevator with a small video camera who claims to be an elevator reviewer" Then he asked me who I was and who I worked for and if I had a Business card. I told him i didn't but I told him my website. At that point, He simply asked "Please dont take any more photos or videos on the mall property" . then I went in the bathroom, upon exiting the bathroom. He was waiting and said "sir, can I please speak with you again". I said "sure". and he said, "my boss called and told me I have to give you 2 options" I said "OK" He said "You can remain on the property but If you do you will need to erase your material taken in the mall." he then said "Or you can keep your material but I will have to escort you off the property" I said "I think I will take option 2 but I have to run by Tevanna and get my wife. He said "no problem sir, we can stop where ever you need on the way out, I just have to verify that you leave the property, no rush sir" THEN I realized why I show dieselducy in the beginning of every video, I uttered the "S" word and he said "what is wrong sir" I told him, "I think i lost some videos" he said "why is something wrong with your camera" and I said it was the card, He then asked "did you loose what you took here" I said, "I think so" He then asked "do you mind showing me your camera' I said "not at all" Then I showed him one of the videos I shot with Nick on UT austin's campus and he actually found it fascinating. Then he got interested and asked to see more of my "cool" elevator videos. I showed him a few more and at that point told me at first when he saw me in the elevator I Scared him because it is not typical to see a man in a service elevator with a camera. At that point he appologized for inconveiniencing me, told me to have a nice day, and told me I am free to go about my business and remain on the property

In my opinion this guard was professional, and did not violate my rights in the least.

If you are a civillian, you shouldn't be using their property without permission.  Just wandering around the maintenance area, they probably think you are a terrorist videotaping the layout of the building for a bomb or other terrorist activity.
