My speckled sussex Lucy takes her dustbathing very seriously. She's really enjoying throwing dirt and rolling around in her freshly dug hole. In the video, I'm so close to her that little dirt clods are hitting me in the head. In the background is Myrtle, my standard golden-laced cochin, who is completely indifferent to the whole thing.

  • hahaha so cute. and why do they do that?? Just wondering

  • it's an instinctual thing - it's a way they have to clean themselves and/or kill bugs that may be living in their feathers. I think it feels good to them too - they seem to really enjoy it and sometimes fall asleep in their little dust holes (it's so cute when that happens).

  • Thanks everyone. Speckled Sussex are so cute aren't they? Lucy has the funniest personality. Don't you love how goofy chickens get when they're dustbathing? They concentrate so heavily. Once I caught Lucy asleep in her dusthole, lying on her side, all stiff with her feet straight out. I thought at first she was dead but when I called her name she popped back to life and began rolling again. She's my cute little girl and champion bug-annihilator. Now if only she'd lay me some eggs . . .

  • Hey!

  • That's so sweet. I'm so glad to see chickens outside and being able to take dust baths and not trapped in a 10by10 inch box in an egg factory or a slaughter house.

  • Always makes me laugh when they do their head in the dirt too...

  • AW I LOVE CHICKEEEEENNNSSSSS!!!

hehe :3 I'm going to get some of my own soon, and this breed was on my list. sweet little curious things ^_^

  • we put food grade DE in their dust baths and sprinkle it everywhere in their coop, and have NEVER had a problem with mites or avian lice!

  • This ladie tries to stay clan :)

  • ohhh hehe interesting ^^

  • it's to get rid of all the pests and bugs that are in their feathers.
