  • There are people out there who still attest that OD&D or B/X D&D or AD&D1 is the best or purest version of D&D. They don't like the goofy little fiddly bits added on in AD&D2, 3.X, or even the "slimmer" 4E. Personally, I don't like any version of D&D, but you can't tell me that L5R 2E was more cost effective, better playtested, or gave a more enjoyable experience than L5R 1E.

Newer does not necessarily equal better.

  • Just like "older doesn't equate better."

Evaluate each game on its own merits.

  • I just checked an inflation calculator, which claims that $30 in 1981 is ~$70 in 2008. Imagine for a second paying $70 for a single RPG product nowadays, especially one as thin as the books that used to come out back then!

  • Checking on Amazon, all three players handbooks will run you about 70 bucks, never mind the dmg and monster manuals. The DMG, Players handbook I and the Monster Manual I will be about 70 dollars all together as well.

  • @azirk83 The system doesn't really matter, because fun is ultimately up to the DM/GM and the players.

  • Plus you have to take into account Inflation. 30$ in '81 was like 50$ today so the price argument is a moot one in my opinion. I like this video John.

  • @gearsofwar2glitchers why does this matter to you?

  • cut your hair please.

  • @LordStrange You are lucky, you have friends to play board games with.

I never played a dungeons and dragons or call of cthulu ever and i think i would probably really like it.

But i lived a life were people around this area simply weren't into those kinda things and was forced to play games alone so i always played console rpgs solo.

i love rpgs btw and adventure games.

  • wtf? scara brae? that's ultima

I'm going to look that up

  • Actually, it's not a step up in price. Rather, it's a step up in nominal price. A quick jump to the inflation calculator shows us, however that $35 in 2008 has a inflation adjusted value of $14.08 in 1981. In other words, the actual cost of the product has gone down by more than half. There's something to think about.

  • The maps in the latest edition of CoC may not be 'sexy' and large, but they're certainly more useful :-)
