  • Mr. Kurt Loebel (1st violin) was my teacher for 36 years. He was my childrens' teacher for 12 years. We recently lost him several weeks ago. He was an incredible musician, human being, and icon to our family and to the Cleveland community who will be missed and thought about often and with fondness.

  • I love it when Gould is playing the subject in the low bass and is completely turned around from the string players. Lol

  • I love this movement!!! Crying...

  • great but....they should buy another stands........those are a complete shitt

  • @Stravinskij0- Do you know the year this recording was made, who made the recording, and the location? Looks very professionally done. The floor design looks like pictures I've seen of designs in Severance Hall in the lower lobby but I've pretty much convinced myself that this is not anywhere in Severance. Thanks for uploading this.

  • My first time hearing this venerable work. It's not the Shostakovich I'm used to hearing, in my biased view of Shostakovich. There's no pastiche or irony here. This movement is a thing unto itself. So tragic.

  • Without doubt, the most brilliant video recording of Shostakovich I have seen. Kurt Loebel was the mainstay of the venerable Cleveland Orchestra for 50 years - it is like a gift from heaven to see him here as a relative youngster. These days it is nearly impossible to find a chamber music ensemble working at this level. Please, if you like this, support your local artists!

  • absolutely brilliant!

  • Gould shows good control of dynamics (and hand gestures!) :)

  • increible ! maestros!

  • A very intriguing performance. One can not say this is intense like the Fitzwilliam with Ashkenazy, but on the other hand it has plenty of soul. "Tasteful" may be the best way to describe this performance, since Shostakovich should be performed with much melancholy. However, it almost seems like a requiem in this performance, and not a bold statement as Shostakovich was so known for.
