To avenge the deaths of his parents and sister, Pai Yi-peng (Ling Yun), a crack swordsman, kills many members of the Leng family and vows to wipe out the others. He takes Leng Chiu-hsia (Lily Li) as hostage, but when he defends himself against the pursuing Leng brothers, Chiu-hsia begs mercy for her father. Pai relents, and is himself severely hurt.
Chiu-hsia feels responsible for his wounds. She tends him and romance blossoms. Her father Leng Ju-feng (Lo Lieh) knows that Pai possesses a map of hidden treasure, and offers him the hand of his daughter. Once they are married, Leng drugs Pai and cripples him, but Pai will still not reveal the site of the treasure and the Leng brothers fling him down a precipice.
He survives. Hsia Hou Hsiao-tung (Wang Yu) comes upon the crippled Pai in his cave retreat. He absorbs Pai's sophisticated fighting skills, and undertakes to travel to Nanking to recover the treasure to hand it over for war relief. On his way, he meets Ling-tzu (Niu Niu) without knowing she is Pai's daughter.
The Leng brothers discover Pai's hideout by spying on Ling-tzu. But the crippled Pai helps the young couple to over- come the Lengs, and the gold is finally safely escorted to the disaster area.
