John Stoa was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1944 where he commenced his working life in the Dundee Parks Department as a gardener. He also studied crop science at The Scottish Crop Research Institute in Invergowrie Dundee. After getting married he moved south to Sussex. He gained his National Diploma in Horticulture in 1969 at college in Essex, then moved to Worcester to work as a manager on Fox Fruit Farm. In 1972 he returned to parks work and outdoor leisure facilities in Dudley then onto Darlington, and Livingston before returning to Dundee in 2001. John became a full time artist in 1992 when redundancy loomed as the Government began to wind up the Scottish new towns. John worked in Livingston Development Corporation in Landscape and Forestry.

John's interest in art was established in early childhood. He is self taught but constantly experiments, and studies the work of other contemporary artists. His subjects have covered town to country, floral to figurative, snow scenes, summer landscapes, boats, Scottish castles and pets. John now tends to paint a reduced range of topics from figure studies to snow scenes, although commission work again extends the range as does work for limited edition prints. John runs art classes and workshops from his Dundee studio and has been publishing limited edition prints throughout his art career, as well as luxury Christmas cards.

A recent development has been the establishment of his ever expanding website www.johnstoa.com This shows his paintings and prints, gives information on art classes and art holiday workshops, his latest exhibitions, corporate art commissions, several pages for his art class students paintings, and now John has put numerous pictures of his garden on the site as well as his new allotment garden. The latter is turning out to be a great inspiration for a new painting project.
