It's ironic that he went from baritone to tenor to sing in this, when recently Placido Domingo has dropped from tenor to baritone to sing the title role.

Perfetta l'impostazione tecnica ( notare come il suono vienne raccolto ogni qual volta la scrittura batte sul passaggio), il timbro è pieno e intenso su tutta la gamma, le legature rifinite, il fraseggio ampio ed eloquente, l'accento sempre pertinente, ora incisivo , ora patetico.

Wow, this is an amazing, especially if he really was 21. He has a more baritonal tone to his voice here, but he doesn't sound like someone who's "still learning the process" (?) He's also incredibly intense here.

Listen to his live Met performance with Milanov and hear how this was the only tenor to get the role right. Tucker etc were good but Bergonzi's was something else. Yes in 1951 he was still learning about his change of voice but enough is there to let us know what was coming in the following years.

Is this really from 1951 when Carlo Bergonzi was 27. I believe that he had "upped" from Baritone to Tenor. I am no expert,maybe somebody can tell me.BUT to my untrained ear,he is still learning the process?

Visto che Verdi Ha delle belle arie nelle opere
meno note. Bergonzi anche molto bravo ma il carisma la classe di franco è un altra cosa.
