Tav Prasaadi Savaiye is the third bani of Sikhs and it presents the third spiritual state called Bairaag or devotional longing. The first state is Jap and we have the bani Jap Ji Sahib. Jap is when we start meditating on the Naam, start remembering God, Jaap is the second state and it is when we start loving God and having a pull towards him during our daily lives. It is described in Guru Granth Sahib in this shabad
Ānīle kāgaḏ kātīle gūdī ākās maḏẖe bẖarmī▫ale.
The boy takes paper, cuts it and makes a kite, and flies it in the sky.
Pancẖ janā si▫o bāṯ baṯa▫ū▫ā cẖīṯ so dorī rākẖī▫ale. ||1|| Talking with his friends, he still keeps his attention on the kite string. ||1||
Man rām nāmā beḏẖī▫ale. My mind has been pierced by the Name of the Lord,
Jaise kanik kalā cẖiṯ māʼndī▫ale. ||1|| rahā▫o. like the goldsmith, whose attention is held by his work. ||1||Pause||
Ānīle kumbẖ bẖarā▫īle ūḏak rāj ku▫ār puranḏrī▫e. The young girl in the city takes a pitcher, and fills it with water.
Hasaṯ binoḏ bīcẖār karṯī hai cẖīṯ so gāgar rākẖī▫ale. ||2|| She laughs, and plays, and talks with her friends, but she keeps her attention focused on the pitcher of water. ||2||
Manḏar ek ḏu▫ār ḏas jā ke ga▫ū cẖarāvan cẖẖādī▫ale. The cow is let loose, out of the mansion of the ten gates, to graze in the field.
Kahaṯ nāmḏe▫o sunhu ṯilocẖan bālak pālan pa▫udẖī▫ale. Says Naam Dayv, listen, O Trilochan: the child is laid down in the cradle.
Anṯar bāhar kāj birūḏẖī cẖīṯ so bārik rākẖī▫ale. ||4||1|| Its mother is at work, inside and outside, but she holds her child in her thoughts. ||4||1||
The fourth state is Benti Chaupai. Benti means request or ardas it means pleading infront of God and begging him to bestow his grace and met you , Of course if you pray to God you reach the fifth state of Anand or bliss of the soul (God realisation)
This bani was composed by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The main theme of this bani is love stronger than all rituals and treasures of this world. Love and faith are discussed in about every stanza. This is line by line English Katha by Bhai Surjeet Singh Jee (Kenya) and Tejkaran Kaur (Queens College Sikh Club). If you would like to request a free cd of all five prayers releases by the Sikh Cultural Society (Japji Sahib Jaap Sahib Sawaiya and Chaupai) email lilsinghnee@yahoo.com. A special thanks to God, Guru Granth Sahib and Khalsa panth as well as the list of gurmukhs in japji sahib.
