Tabla music began as dancing music, in Northern Indian courts in the early 1700s, and the complex rhythmic systems of tabla, like the technique of western classical ballet, demand the devotion and utter concentration of the artists who practice them. Yet, at the heart of the music and the dance, there is a sense of openness, of arising in joy, of soaring beyond the structures and being held there, aloft. This collaboration between Alonzo King and tabla master Zakir Hussain is both a continuation of a deep tradition and an expression of the contemporary global vision of both artists.

Danced by Alonzo King LINES Ballet Company
This looks amazingly awkward. Ballet a western classic dance developed specifically without percussion danced to Indian classical music which relies quite heavily on percussion. Ballet just isn't suited for fast spontaneous movements.

After spending the first minute of this piece only able to ogle at the dancers' physiques, I shook myself out of the daze and focused on the movement which had helped to develop the languid but taut muscles on the Lines dancers. It is exciting to see the collaboration of Zakir Hussein and the company- frenetic movements pair easily with the tabla, but painfully pulled out adagios contrast with the accompaniment with equal compatability.

GO TAKE A DANCE AND BALLET HISTORY COURSE. There are many definitions of the word "ballet" and it doesn't have to necessarily mean classical. You should delete your ignorant response to this very creative excerpt.

ballet is slowly evolving to encompass a much wider range of motion than it did before. while it's true that ballet has very strong classic roots, part of the intention of LINES, at least from what i've seen and understood, involves reaching out to include other movements and cultures into what has been a primarily western media.
