@jhaley12 you answered your own question. It's about control. I don't have a steady hand, and it's the only way I can get those defined lines.

with the shadow, what do you mean by a wash of black, because i want to draw a shadow of a tree on my painting,

@RoseBubbi a wash is paint that is heavily thinned with water. I do that so the underling greens and yellows of the grass show through slightly and the shadow doesn't look flat.

@TameStrawberry Thick color worked very fast to create a slight blending effect. simple white or off white lines over the darker sections. If you search "Tim Gagnon" it's a modified version of his wetter technique.
