1 - Spellbound Main Title

This is a rehearsal take of our new recording from SPELLBOUND. It's performed by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Allan Wilson. We expect to have this out in April from INTRADA.

I don't see or hear the THEREMIN in any of the videos. The theremin was an integral part of this score. It should have been recorded with the rest of the orchestra for continuity, so if it was added later that's going to detract from its effect. If it was omitted altogether, or played on a synthesizer, well, that wouldn't be the first time that's happened. However, one has to ask, would that be done with any other orchestral instrument (other than a pipe organ, where logistics can be an issue)?

Undoubtedly the best theme music of that time, which evokes the movies of that era so well.

Just found this on amazon: "In late November 2006, the score was brought to Bratislava, Slovakia where it was recorded in its entirety with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Slovak Radio Concert Hall under the skillful baton of Allan Wilson and engineered by Peter Fuchs. For authenticity, an actual theremin was located in London and recorded at the Ridge Farm Studios in West Sussex. The theremin was performed by Celia Sheen."

Since they call this a "reconstruction", I suppose the theremin will be where it belongs. They will probably add it as an overdub, in order to save recording/pitch fishing time ;-)

Or it is in a separate booth, as it was done for the re-recording of the "Day the Earth Stood Still" score.

The first few measures are actually Alfred Newman's theme composed to accompany the Selznick Studio insignia/logo. It sounds strange from the perspective in this video, as all one can hear is the brass rather than the brigher timbres of strings and bells.

But, does any body know why Alfred Hitchcock didn't like the score and never worked with Miklós again. Was it perhaps that he felt upstaged by the score?
