Normally speaking, you'd be right, but under American law, murders a lot more heinous and without any element of defending oneself, are classed as self-defense.

Think for instance of the jogger who immediatly gunned down two kids and murdered one when they asked him for money. An unarmed 16 year old vs a fully grown man is no risk at all, yet the murder was classified as self-defense and he was released without charge.
