Up at the highest peaks of the so-called Frentani Mountains of which the Woods of Montagna and Carunchino are a part, the panorama is solitary and solemn, with a great expanse of woods in their depths, guarding the most varied environments of great beauty and biological value. There are mostly groves of tall oaks and forest trees which on the highest peaks consist of beech wood. The numerous forest trails are easy to trace on foot or on horseback. The prevalently forest site at some points host rich clearings of orchids. As one descends there is a prevalence of oak woods highly frequented by visitors in search of truffles and porcine mushrooms. The numerous bird species are those that live in woods, almost all are small birds such as the marsh tit, the finch, the rare black woodpecker, and the little shrike. The shelter and the various niches offered by the vegetation are ideal sites for the nestling of birds and hunting of diverse species of predatory birds like the sparrow-hawk, buzzard, kestrel and rarer species such as the brown kite. The mammals are represented by the most noble species: the wolf, roe, deer, wild boar, skunk, Pine marten, badger and rare wild cat. Also due to the abundance of surface waters, among the amphibians we also mark out the presence of the Three-toed Salamander.
