The story of DJ Stephens is a must tell on many levels. First of, Stephens graduated c/o 2009 as a young senior (17 years-old) and planned on attending a Prep School. Then he hooks up with the Texas D-1 Ambassadors AAU travel team. In Mid-July, he and the Texas D-1 Ambassadors played in the River City Showdown held on the campus of the University of Memphis. What I remember most about Stephens during that touney was that he was always hustling, always playing hard, and was always by or above the rim. His play caught the attention of University of Memphis Coach, Josh Pastner, whom at the time had just taken over the programs after Calipari left for Kentucky. Pastner saw Stephens and offered him weeks later.
