CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The Federal Government hires two major Cincinnati law firms to defend Internal Revenue Service employees in one of the lawsuits arising from the targeting of conservative groups. There's a taxpayer expense of 200 dollars an hour or more to keep the firms of Squire Sanders and Taft Stettinius and Hollister on retainer. They represent 19 employees sued in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati. The Justice Department says it is longstanding policy to provide representation for federal employees sued for conduct performed as part of their jobs. A California-based tea party group filed the lawsuit and other conservative groups joined. They say they were subjected to intrusive scrutiny when seeking tax-exempt status. The Justice Department wants the suit dismissed.
