Spectators Join Bullfight-21/01/2007-New

When January comes around, hundreds of daredevils risk their lives jumping into the ring to play with one thousand-pound bulls in Colombia's unruly bull festivals.

An average of 20 participants die each year in the "corralejas" which have been held annually for more than 150 years in towns across Colombia's northern plains.

Though nobody has died this year, but nearly 10 people were struck, and dozens of others suffered lesser cuts.

Four horses, bearing riders who spear the bulls, were killed.

The only certain survivors in the arena are the bulls themselves. Unlike in traditional bullfights with skilled matadors, it is forbidden to kill the animals.

Bullfighting almost came to an abrupt end in Sincelejo after the temporary four-story wooden stadium collapsed in 1980, killing some 200 spectators. The event was suspended for 16 years.

Bullfighting is the most disgusting and indefensible type of animal abuse. Countries like Spain and Mexico torture and abuse these defenseless animals in order to carry on a sickening tradition of bull fighting. Sick Countries like Spain and Mexico should hang their heads in shame.
