Here's a video of a great classic Stern pin: Lightning.
Lightning has got all the bells and whistles (speech, multiball, multilevel) that make early 80's pins so desirable. However, unlike machines like Williams Black Knight and Gottlieb's Black Hole, Lightning is not widely considered as one of the great games of the 80's. This is probably caused by the brand, Stern. Stern pins generally didn't have great production numbers, Machines like Lightning are not widely known because of that. They were mostly considered ' a poor man's Bally' .
A shame. Because a lot of these Stern games have very interesting layouts, innovative rulesets, and importantly:great gameplay! Lightning is definately one of the gems from the company. Sadly, it's also one of their last, as in 1982 they stopped producing pinball machines.
I've restored this particular machine myself, almost from ground up. First, I repaired it. Then I took it apart, cleaned every part thorougly, and put it back together. The coin door and legs have been repainted. The machine has fresh rubbers, flipper units and flipper switches. The playfield has three coats of wax on it. The backglass, which is in great shape, is now protected by three layers of clearcoat.
All of the above took me about a week. And it shows. The machine looks great. It plays even better. As you can see, lightning fast (pun intended ;). I'm very proud of it.
I hope you enjoy this video of me playing it as much as I had making it.. Always a pleasure.
Klopt, de middelste droptargets missen de 'S' van Stern. Mocht je ze nog hebben liggen, ze zijn zeker welkom! Zo niet, dan maak ik er stickers voor.
