The FIXX "The Fool" from 'Shuttered Room' [1982]

The Lyrics:

A sort of place you don't often find
A quiet room to go out of your mind
Will you excuse me whilst I confide
I've found a place where I can hide
Lights out by nine as a rule
One grey blanket and a stool
Angels fear to tread where stands the fool
But the air is warm, and the walls are cool
So I'm kept away, so here I'll stay
Even the judges kneel and pray
I am the winner in any event, SNAP!
Who was the man who said society's bent?
So I'm locked away in my padded cocoon
Square of hell where nightmares bloom
Armageddon couldn't come too soon
But if it only meant that I could leave this room
Here stands the Fool
Here stands the Fool
Here stands the Fool...

  • Mtv had to kill this music because it's thinking music and quite sophisticated and MTV wanted a dumbing down because the stupid are easily manipulated. So cheers to all you baggy pant wearing little gangstas out their for being so damn stupid.Hiphop and MTV have taught you population control by teaching you to be in gang's and shoot each other and to stand for evil thought and wrongful existence. The real life, and all the garbage that followed.

  • @blitzspeer Absolutely right. And take note that your first sentence also describes what happened to movies, politics, advertising and journalism as well. Dumb down the masses and you can manipulate them into doing/voting/paying for whatever you want. Problem is society will fall apart eventually if you dumb it all down. Sad.

  • Maybe all us fools should meet in a shuttered room..no wait..we already are!! Mmmm 1982-2012...fucking 30 years already people. Maybe The Fixx knew something?

  • tune pal...

  • @bleuroo (contd.)

Not trying to apologize for MTV or justify it -- because I was angry also when they dropped music for reality TV -- but to blame MTV for "killing music" is like blaming a cruise ship for causing a tsunami.

Music lives as long as fans show interest and support -- regardless of how much or little airplay it gets. If you want to keep Fixx music alive: see the band, buy their stuff legit (no burned copies), & pester MCA to put Phantoms & Shuttered Room back in print.

  • @hiddenfire65 agreed! If it wasn't for MTV I wouldn't have known of the band's existence & wouldn't have scoured the radio for a station that knew of the band and that would play their songs. MTV can take credit for bringing the Fixx to USA's attention.

MTV didn't "kill" this music either -- New Wave fans just moved on to other sounds -- and when New Wave ceased to be profitable, MTV moved on, too. Rap was "the next new thing" that had a buzz about it, so MTV followed the money.

THX, I'll be checking some of that out. That TT clip you're referencing is, "Life's What You Make It". Great song, BTW! Hey, one of these days I'm going to get to Australia and to New Zealand. Both countries are on my radar.

  • @n8tureboy Yeah both Icehouse & Midnight Oil were some of my homegrown favourites. And Talk Talk I loved too - especially their film clip shot in the forrest at nigt - awesome. To get an idea about whats happening in Oz underground music check out the lofly web site in Australia. A few bands to check out are Nova Scotia, Mr Maps & aheadphonehome. The last two are very low fi - but hidden amongst the sonic wall is some very tasty production & songwriting.

Hey Mate! Do you like Icehouse and Midnight Oil? You Aussies produced some fine music yourselves. I love the Fixx, they are my favorite band followed by Canada's Saga and Talk Talk and Big Country. I miss the 80's how 'bout you? Sorry to reminisce like this, but dang the music back then was sooooooo innovative and original, you know? I didn't really have MTV because we lived in the 'bush' here and didn't have cable TV then. I love YT though, it's addicting. N8

  • @n8tureboy Man - you're listening hard to pick that one up!! I loved this band to death as a pre-pubesent pimpled teenager. My favourite album from the 80's. This was my first album that I repeatedly listened to on headphones. It's only now I realise this album was my bridge between the crushing pain of Joy Division and the slightly less suicidal joy of New Order. It's intersting to see the debate on MTV - as I'm from Australia, and we had no MTV & the Fixx were pretty much under ground here.

  • The Strain is the best song by The Fixx but I can't find it :(

  • GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
