Schools for Haiti: Malteser International helps future generations to create better lives

Even in these difficult times, education is the main focus for many Haitians. Children often have to walk for more than two hours to get to school. Still, for the children in Darbonne, school is their only hope for escaping from the poverty and misery of their lives. Education remains the most promising opportunity for future generations to create better lives for themselves.
Together with the local communities, Malteser International develops concepts in order to improve the infrastructure of the schools, and at the same time to create a child-friendly space. Besides the installation of temporary classrooms in Darbonne, a nursery, an education centre as well as two further schools are planned for Darbonne and seven schools in the remote hinterland. All schools will be constructed to be earthquake- and cyclone-resistant, and communities will be trained in disaster risk reduction.
