The coolest thing I ever heard about this song was in an interview with Jonny who came up with the the dominant spacey guitar riff.

He said what inspired it was watching windshield-wipers on a rainy day and noticing how they'd start out of synch but slowly synchronize with each other at a steady pattern of speed, and then separate again, and again like that.

Notice how the drums don't fall in, until the reverb "catches up" with the beat...just like windshield wipers approaching a synch.
