A comparison of some old tube image sensor videocameras (early 1980s) with modern CCD cameras.
Of course there is a great difference in image sharpness and color!
But I think the old tube-cams have a nice retro-charm :-)

  • Wait, were any of those 3 Tube cameras?

  • I like the Saba Saticon and thte Sony Trinicon images...There's something about those old cameras that even though you have HD now...it's nice to have that '1980s' look...Can that look be duplicated via a video editing filter in an NLE?

  • I've got the A2 and I'd love having a Sony Trinicon camera. In my opinion the Trinicon gives the best picture quality of the tube cameras. I'm pretty amazed that some tubes had better picture quality than the MOS.

  • I hate ccd. Its image does not last and it looks cheesy. How ever I do feel tube cameras give you this organic and natural look that no digital camera can reproduce.

  • @princegalena Agreed I genuninely didnt realise there was so much difference in tube cameras - Depending on the camera/tube quality. At least with CCD or CMOS - You at least get a basic standard of what camera quality you use!

    Dear dear...

  • @RollinRolex I think we can come to the general consensus that the SABA saticon was the worst of them all.

  • @RollinRolex I think we can all pretty much agree that the SABA saticon is definitely the worst of all of them

  • @princegalena Ahh, got me there, my friend!

  • @RollinRolex That's true that the Trinicon had the most accurate color, though a little bit over-saturated. The Newvicon, however, had better sharpness and contrast. Though both the Newvicon and Trinicon tubes were definitely better than the Hitachi 1 chip MOS

  • @princegalena I disagree my friend. Didnt the Sony Trinicon tubes deliver more accurate colour reproduction? The majority of those tube cameras looked faded and washed out, but the trinicon one looked... to me, closest to the original.
