Overview
In this lesson, we'll cover both Intel and AMD CPU Processors, what features and specs to look for when shopping, and how much you can expect to pay.

The processor or CPU is the brains of the computer and does the majority of the PCs work. There are currently 2 major CPU makers, Intel and AMD. Intel has three families of processor, Celeron at the low end, Pentium in the middle and at the high end, the latest processor family, called Core. AMD also has three product families, Sempron at the low end, Athlon in the middle and Phenom at the top.

Intel and AMD CPUs require a motherboard made specifically for them. The processor you buy will determine the type of motherboard you need for your system. See the motherboard component lesson coming up next for more on choosing a motherboard http://www.mindbites.com/lesson/1517 .

CPU's connect to the motherboard through the cpu socket. Choose socket LGA 775, also called socket T for Intel and socket AM2, or AM2+ for AMD. Intel introduced a new socket type in November of 2008 called LGA1366, or Socket B. This new socket supports the new Core i7 CPU from Intel. AMD will introduce its new CPU socket, the socket AM3 in early 2009. Socket AM3 will support AMDs new CPU family that will compete with Intels Core i7 CPU.

This lesson is part of a comprehensive series of lessons created by Home PC Builder that will guide you through the process of building your computer (from the selection internal and external components through installation and setup).

You can purchase all 28 lessons in the course and save 46%.

Intel and AMD CPUs:
All three product families from both makers

Performance - Intel vs AMD

Front Side Bus and Interconnects:
Both are explained in simple, easy to understand terms

Multi core, Operating Frequency and Cache size

Pricing:
We cover how much to pay for a CPU depending on your needs

Cooling the CPU- Heatsink and Fan options

Overclocking- Making the CPU run faster than intended to get more speed

The video ends with a summary of features and specifications to look for when buying.

In the installation lessons well go over how to install both Intel and AMD CPU's onto their motherboards (www.mindbites.com/lessons/1533).

  • @CTGCamo Looks almost identical to a box I built in February. Should be a good time, know yourself out!

  • AMD is cheaper for a reason lol

You get what you pay for, if you purchased amd cause you couldn't afford intel don't bash on intel praising AMD please.

  • They are just different. One isn't inherently better than the other. AMD has had better chips on the market than Intel many times.

  • little bit old, the phenom 2's are not in here.

  • This lesson is several months old so yes, the newest and greatest isn't in here.

  • Actually intel did something innovative too, like the new Sandy bridge arithmetic cpus

  • For the price 1 intel processor you get the Amd processor + you can buy a good processorfan. Do not use the stock Amd fan, it makes to much noise. Whatever you buy, you need a good fan + good bios settings.

  • uhm can somebody tell me did the mainboard need to comfortable with the CPU???

  • @CTGCamo intel DH55HC, will work great.

  • the thing is, intel does the same like amd, but better

  • Hello I need a new motherboard and a processor for my computer. It is for Crysis 2 coming out. Can you suggest any two that would suffice and work well together? I also have an ATI Radeon HD graphics card.

  • @DKY193 i have a Intel and i was thinking the exact same thing... amd seems to be the ones making all the changes for the better and intel seems to be copying, i thought for sure intel would do something new to rivel but seems like there just copying everything... :I
