1973 Richard Lester rollicking, original of the Dumas classic tale. An absolute joyful tongue in cheek version with incredible production design by Brian Eatwell, photography by Michel Legrand. With Michael York as D'Artagnan, the country bumpkin come to make his name as Musketeer. Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay as the three who take D'Artagnan under their wings.

  • At least it's half-ways close to the story. Except, he had a new blade mounted in his father's sword at Meung where he was attacked (no offer of a new sword); Athos grabs and holds him on the stairs; Porthos is not mounted on a fake horse, but standing outside the main door (and he is a much taller man, not fatter); the lady dropped a handkerchief to Aramis not a purse . . . but all those boo-boos were minor compared to airships, Cardinals wanting to seduce the queen, etc.

  • @Iwasateeninthe80s The most recent version of the 3 Musketeers show again, how terrific this Richard Lester handled the story and the setting. Yes, there are some minor changes, which I feel are still consistent with the spirit of the original.

  • Agreed. The colors seem more reflective of Rembrandt than the Hollywood costumers. One of the great movies, pure entertainment! Ditto on the "fan forever!"

  • @Kit008Cat

Yes, I fell instantly in love with him when I watched this movie for the first time.

  • The first real-life depiction of musketeer life ... dirty, less flamboyant, more dull-colored.

And with the humor and action in the story, this is the best version of the 3Ms' I've ever seen. fan forever!
