@Solesole16- read the book. Or watch the movie in it's entirety. You're misinformed and it's really worth the effort to read it. I know you'd be fascinated by the plot. It's a brilliant story. THEN when you watch it, this scene will be even more devastating than it already seems..:)

I think he's saying the contrary, actually. :) Not "it's not you, it's me" but "my love has difficulties lasting your vertue" = What he really wanted was...well, sex. Now that he got it, he's not interested in her anymore. And when he says "It's beyond my control", he's saying it's men's nature to be like this, so that she shouldn't be reproaching him anything.

I admit I've only seen parts of it. But I read the book, studied it and we spend a lot of time on this part, when he breaks up, and he says exactly the same here than in the book. But please, explain your point of view and tell me why I'm wrong.

He is saying what he has been told to tell her.

To repeat an empty sentence that doesn't mean anything, to make her suffer and consume Glenn Close's revenge.

But in reality he is in love with her. That's the tragedy, So, in a sense, it really is 'beyond his control'. He is in Glenn Closes's control.

I studied the book years ago, so i don't really remember it that well. But the movie is another 'entity', to be understood in itself. Just watch the whole movie! It's a masterpiece.

cheers!

@solesole16 ; No :)

Valmont vas in love with Tourvel. But he has been manipulated by Merteuil, who forced him to leave Tourvel, by saying that being is love is a cowardice for a libertine ... He's in love with tourvel, but he left her to keep his "pride".

( I'm french. Sorry for my English. )
