6/25/07 The California Young Democrats delivered "Wish You Were Here" postcards to the Governor's office to make sure he knows that we want our Governor in our State responding to urgent crises, making sure the budget passes and ensuring California gets a new healthcare plan.
Schwarzenegger Fiddles in France While Tahoe Burns
Oh that Arnold. Who says he can't multi-task? After mending his rift with his home town in Austria, California's globe-hopping governor managed to squeeze in a half-hour meeting with France President Nicolas Sarkozy to discuss global warming (Apparently, Arnold only read the Cliff Notes version of An Inconvenient Truth in his quest to be "green.") On Tuesday he is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Tony Blair (15 minutes to debrief on Iraq?)
Meanwhile, back in the state that employs Arnold, hundreds of California firefighters are risking their lives battling a raging wildfire which has been described as the biggest natural disaster ever to hit the Lake Tahoe region, with 400 families evacuated, 200 homes already destroyed and no end in sight.
We have to wonder if Arnold will cut short his European Vacation and flex some of that "global leadership" our way. Perhaps if enough TV cameras showed up, he just might. We can picture it now: Arnold in a firefighter hat, waving a "fire containment accomplished" banner. After all, he's always been such a good friend to our brave firefighters.
Now that's a photo for the family vacation archives.
I'm hoping he enjoyed his vacation. Meanwhile, he doesn't seem to have accomplished any of his major goals. What is he's taking a vacation from again?

Well, a quick reading of the California Constitution reveals that when the Governor crosses the state line, the powers and duties of the Governor devolve to the Lt. Governor.
Arnold's first duty is to the people of California, and for him to jet-set around Europe (on a trip paid for by a shadowy foundation which can--and does--received unlimited contributions from business groups with a right-wing agenda) while homes and businesses go up in smoke is nothing less than galling.

It seems like you guys need someone to hold your hands. If you don't see how promotiong California in Europe is beneficial to the state then I feel bad for you. You really think the Governor can only do things from Sacramento?

I don't see a valid point here either.
A politician can't do the fire-fighting himself, you know. If the emergency response works as it should, a politician ought not to be too meddlesome.

that wasn't even just. Arnold was in tahoe with the Governor of Nevada. He even got his hands dirty picking through rubble. And he's done his part with the budget. It's in the hands of the other bureaucrats.
