Come fly with me! A rare opportunity to observe one of the last navigation training flights in the T-43A aircraft at Randolph AFB, San Antonio, TX, before the jet is retired after 37 years of Air Force service.
We spent two hours flying over West Texas and a bit of New Mexico, with Lt Col Pete Deitschel, Commander of 562 Squadron, giving us an insight into the training and operations of this branch of the 12th Flying Training Wing.

Pish posh, you can't see any returns with the T-43 radar! But you CAN see frustrated students trying to figure out the T-43 radar... Ha ha!

Sigh...can't believe the T-43 is retiring! Seems like just yesterday when I arrived at Mather AFB, CA as a brand new 3-level crew chief. Learned a lot in my two years on the T-43. And didin't truly appreciate what "ease of maintenance" until my next assignment to an F-4 base... Worked with a great bunch of folks and have lots of wonderful memories; Goodbye, Gator!
