At my cousin's wedding reception on July 3rd, 2009, my father and his brother treated us all to a rendition of a song about Washington DC that they learned in elementary school. After a bit of searching I found some information on the song.
What They sang....
Washington, the fairest city in the greatest land of all,
Named for one, our countrys father who first answered freedoms call,
God bless the White House, the Capitol too,
and keep ever flying the Red, White and Blue,
Washington, the fairest city in the greatest land of all,
Named for one, our countrys father who first answered freedoms call,
**they stumble on the words a little bit here, on the spot recall is tricky :3**
Oh the cherry blossoms bring a lot of joy each Spring,
and the statue of Abe Lincoln greets your eye,
When parades pass in review down Pennsylvania Avenue,
evrybody lifts their voices to the sky!
Washington, the fairest city in the greatest land of all,
Named for one, our countrys father who first answered freedoms call,
God bless the White House, the Capitol too,
and keep ever flying the Red, White and Blue,
==== Correct Lyric Sequence ====
Washington
Words and Music by Jimmie Dodd
Washington, the fairest city in the greatest land of all,
Names for one, our countrys father who first answered freedoms call,
God bless our White House, our Capitol too,
and keep ever flying the Red, White and Blue,
Grandest spot beneath the sun is Washington.
Oh the cherry blossoms bring a lot of joy each Spring,
and the statue of Abe Lincoln greets your eye,
When parades pass in review down Pennsylvania Avenue,
evrybody lifts their voices to the sky!
Washington, the fairest city in the greatest land of all,
Names for one, our countrys father who first answered freedoms call,
God bless our White House, our Capitol too,
and keep ever flying the Red, White and Blue,
Grandest spot beneath the sun is Washington.

I would love to get my hands on the sheet music for this - any body know how I can find a copy?

In the early 1960s, my 6th grade teacher had us sing this song for a few months, after we said the Pledge of Allegiance. I don't remember it going over very well.
