For beginners learning to play Appalachian mountain dulcimer in the old traditional style. A general overview showing how to tune back and forth easily between mixolydian, aeolian, ionian, and dorian modes.
Using the key of D for my example, and starting in DAd tuning, I demonstrate how to tune from mixolydian DAd to aeolian DAC, then to ionian DAA, and finally to dorian DAG. Then I re-tune back through each made again until I'm back in DAd. It's easier than you might think. Watch and see!
My cat Pearl makes her appearance in the beginning- she was going to demonstrate how to play Cluck Old Hen using an archaic claw-drone style...but she 'chickened' out at the last minute and so I had to do the video instead.
This video is part of my traditional mountain dulcimer noter and drone playing BLOG for beginners:

Ah finally...a video showing how to tune that is understandable. :) Might be worth noting for people that you can also use the bass/middle strings to help you tune the melody without needing a tuner... Thanks for posting.

I was really impressed by the extra possibilities that the instrument reaches when tuned in different modes...it has been able to make me experiment a tune of the middle age that could not be approached using Mixolydian mode. Thank you for posting. A deeper development of this topic would be very appreciated :-)

Your video explained this so much better than the book I bought. Somehow it never had gotten into my thick skull the relationship of the first note of the keys location on the melody string to the mode :O
Thank you and keep the videos coming!
