Computer eyestrain can hurt productivity, but it's easy to prevent if you take a few precautions.

To complete this How-To you will need:

A properly lit workspace
An LCD monitor
A copy stand
Computer glasses
An anti-glare screen or computer hood (optional)

Step 1: Turn down the lights

Close the blinds and turn off extra lights to reduce glare.

Tip: Use an anti-glare screen or computer hood if you can't reduce the light in your office.

Step 2: Upgrade your monitor

Buy an LCD monitor, since older CRT monitors produce flicker, a major source of eyestrain. Use a monitor measuring at least 19 inches with a dot pitch of .28 millimeters or lower.

Tip: If you're stuck with a CRT monitor, set the refresh rate as high as possible to reduce flicker.

Step 3: Look away

Look out a window or down a hall. Break up computer work by focusing on a distant object every twenty minutes.

Step 4: Blink more

Blink to keep your eyes moist. Blink 10 times, slowly, every half hour.

Step 5: Use a copy stand

Use a copy stand and place it next to your monitor to reduce the distance your eyes must travel between page and screen.

Tip: Make sure printed materials are well lit, but don't shine a lamp on the screen or in your eyes.

Step 6: Use computer glasses

Use computer glasses, which are designed specifically for the distance between your eyes and the computer screen.

  • My eyes started hurting a lot when I watched this video. I think it's harder to notice if you are not thinking about eyestrain...

  • I don't need eyes? cool!

  • A couple years ago, I couldn't stare at a screen for 3 or more hours. I've used the computer over 80-90 hours a week, and now, I can stare endlessly for 10 hours. No excessive blinking. Muahaha

  • Step 1: Don't watch Howcast videos!

  • Well the video was extremely helpful...until you mentioned braille computers. blindess scares the hell out of most people and mentioning that when they're trying to prevent eyestrain will probably make them fightened or paranoid.

  • Step 1 : Shut down your computer and leave it in the dump.......

  • lawl. pause at 0:08

  • CRTs were the Best so much for SED technology =)

  • LCD monitors are bad if you want to get a good monitor get a ASUS led lcd monitor in whatever size. Get a Antec 6 led Bias light strip. Make sure your LCD

isn't too dark cause that can strain the eyes more then a bright one. Turn your settings down with the Graphics card. Get a Good graphics card like a EVGA onboard isn't always the best. I had serious pricklying and burning sensations of the face and arms for the longest time.

  • How To Prevent Computer Eyestrain: Don't look at the computer to close.
