Waylon Jennings - Amanda (1979)

"Amanda" was originally written by Bob McDill and was first recorded by Don Williams in 1973. After finishing what he called "an apology to my wife," McDill sent the demo tape to Waylon's office, where it apparently was lost.

Waylon first heard the song when Williams' version was released, and he even called McDill to tell him that the song was right up his alley, and wished that McDill had given him the first chance to record the song.

McDill then explained to Waylon that he had given him dibs to the song, and Jennings responded by recording the song for his 1974 "I'm a Ramblin' Man" album.

Jennings didn't intend for the song to be released as a single, because he assumed that it had run its course on the country charts.

Five years later, in 1979, Jennings released his first "Greatest Hits" album, and "Amanda" was included. RCA Records, whom Jennings was recording for at the time, released Jennings' version of the song as a single, and it went straight to #1.

  • @BlackBerry1x1

He looks just like my dad..growing up I heard so many people come up to my dad thinking he was Waylon. or just to tell him he looked so much like him. I love him and all his music.

  • Many years ago when I stopped at a little cafe on the road to Lubbock, a little boy would come over and sit nearby and hustle some change to put in the jukebox. The song he played was always by Waylon Jennings, who he proudly offered was his Daddy. I've always wondered about this child, and the dark-haired woman working there. A price is paid for art, which may be priceless.

  • love this song and music
