!!!DESERT BIOME!!! (How Deserts Are Formed) SCIENCE EXPERIMENT

Crazy Chris is checking out desert formation and shows you why hot deserts are cold at night!

Objective: To understand the lack of moisture in desert biomes can effects tempretures.

Materials Needed:
~ 2 Glass Jars
~ 2 Thermometers
~ 2 Plastic Zipping Bag
~ Equal Amounts of Some Ice
~ Equal Amounts of Sand
~ Hot Sunny Day or A Window Sill

Step 1) Fill your 2 glass jars with equal amounts of sand and put a thermometer in each jar.

Step 2) Leave these in the sun for about 15mins or untill the thermometers reach maximum tempreture.

Step 3) Fill 2 bags of with equal amounts of ice and go get your 2 jars backing in the sun.

Step 4) Place a small folded towel on top of the one of the jars and then put the ice bags on top of the jars. Let this sit for about 10mins.

HOW DOES IT WORK:
A Desert is any body of land that gets less then 250 mls of water per year. Hot deserts are hot because sand heats up fast and transfers heat to the air quickly, making day time in the desert extreamly hot. Hot desrts are cold at night due to lack of moisture which would condence and form clouds to help hold in heat. Just like how the cloth acts like clouds to hold heat in the jar. Since deserts rarly ever have clouds, it means the desert faces the night sky. The sand looses its heat to the air very quickly and the heat in the air is sucked out into space. Which is why the jar with just ice cools down much faster then the jar with the cloth. Most deserts are formed by whats known as a rain shadow, where mountains block the path of moisture to the desert landscape. Due to this lack of moisture theres very little plants life to form topsoil leaving exposured the rocky surface. Only a small amount of deserts are acctualy sandy. You might think of deserts as are hot, dry and sandy place, yet some of the the coldest places on earth are also very dry. Such as the artic and the antartic which are so cold that it very rarely ever rains or snows. In fact there are places in Anartica where it hasnt snowed for for hundreds of years.
