This is a great technique for taking portraits using shallow depth of field to give your portraits a distinctive look. In the studio Gavin Hoey takes you through the technique using the smick.co.uk lightbank softbox with daylight bulbs and shows you the examples along the way.

  • hi, nice video could you tell me what shutter speeds was the camera picking?

  • @horton5571 We would not know what shutter speeds Gavin used but you need a shutter speed fast enough to give you sharp results. I depends on the amount of light and you can also alter the iso to get a fast enough shutter speed.

  • as in what is aperture how to set the rite ISO, aperture, exposure and shutter speed i use a 600D that i've bought after a couple of years of saving and you seem like a person who'd run those f1.8s very easily to an alternative learning person like me :)

  • @burningbaba Set you camera in Av mode and select the widest aperture and your camera will set the speed if its too slow increase the ISO

  • @smickphoto thanks a million! you've been my mentor in learning photography i've been saving some and got some equip and i need a little help as i am facing a few issues with speedlites. it would be a big big help if you could guide me i am a very quick learner and wont waste much of ur time. if i could write to you?

    much thanks :)

  • @burningbaba Best idea would be to go on a course local to you.

  • You should get the "I shoot RAW" shirt ;)

  • @StrawberryBlog Both take good pictures its what you do with the light a flash setup is more versatile that all.

  • Youre so good! ♥_♥

What do you like more to photograph with flashlight or continues light?

I bought my studio light today. And they said that ALL photographer photograph with flashlight. And then I was like..but wait..on school we photograph with continues light. And the dude in the store said that that's not good. But your photographs are amazing

  • @captfilk Thank so much mate :)

  • @burningbaba larger the aperature(small f) the more light will get to sensor so large exposure but you will have very small dof(focus on field) that means very small part of shot will be in focus rest will go blur..

that's y lens with large aperture are called fast lens(large exposure so one can use fast shutter speed) and also used to create bokeh effect(blur background)

    hope this help mate
