Huasco Songs is an artistic collaboration between Stian Skagen, Gerardo Gonzalez and Erikk McKenzie, blending the disciplines of documentation, music, installation and performance. The project is based on photography, video and audio material, as well and objects and reflections accumulated during a travel in Chile in December 2006 - January 2007.

Valle Huasco lies on the border of the Atacama Desert in one of the dryest regions in the world. This means of course that the ecologic balance in this area is extremely fragile. Three glaciers are the source of water for both humans, animals and vegetation, and Barrick Gold, a multinational mining company, have established mines to access gold reserves lying under these glaciers. The risk of mercury pollution, drought and ecologic instability is huge. Once again our environment is put at stake for the sake of short time economic "profit", an environment we are a part of, and that we are dependent upon in order to continue our lives on this planet.

Huasco Song is the performance aspect of the project Huasco Songs - intended for galleries and public spaces like theaters. With an ever changing structure, adapting to context - Huasco Song has been performed at Theaterschool Amsterdam and La Poderosa (Barcelona) in 2007, and in OT301 (Amsterdam) and Andergrond Gallery (den Haag) in 2008.

Our hope is that through our creativity more people will get to know the situation in Valle Huasco, to help the necessary consciousness and action arise in order to keep clean water flowing through the valley of Huasco for as long as plants, animals and humans need it to live.

AGUA VALE MAS QUE ORO / WATER IS MORE WORTH THAN GOLD

Thanks to all the people we have met on our journeys, especially to Margarita, Papo and Marcela in Valparaiso, and for the hospitality and inspiration we received from the people we met in the Arco Iris gathering in Conay, Valle Huasco.
