@Chris: "Jesus said I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE."
All religions make that same claim, each rooted in some culture in some part of the world, each as different as the culture they came from, each absolutely certain of their signs and miracles. Your certainty only makes sense to you and those who share your faith, to others it is just a story.

Here is some philosophy for you. Here is some enlightenment for you. Jesus said I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. Jesus is the manifestation of the Eternal spirit of God, and he is the answer to all of life's questions. There are 3 questions that YOU will ask one day, if you havn't already. Which way do I go in life, what is my destiny? what is truth? What is the meaning of LIFE. it is all wrapped up in Jesus Christ.
Love you Bro.

You're right. Sorry about that Marduk, subduer of Tiamat, who created the earth and sky by cleaving her corpse in two. Didn't mean to step on your toes there.
What's that you say? You mean a DIFFERENT god almighty? Why should yours take precedence over Marduk? After all, my story is at least 1,000 years older than yours, so it must be more accurate.
So many ridiculous myths, vs the history arrived at by the scientific method. On second thought, I'll discard them all and stick with science.

Nice try, but I believe God almighty beat you to the punch. He doesn't ask for our help, lol

Of course, I'd cleverly disguise each step to look like a random genetic mutation that is acted upon by natural selection. I can't expect people to have faith in me if I go around PROVING my existence, now can I??
-
I can tell you how I'd do it in a genetic, reproducing organism.
First, I'd cause light sensing cells to appear in clusters. Then, I'd cause pits to occur at these clusters, giving some directionality. Next, I'd associate mucous production with the eyepit, allowing primitive images. Then, I'd make a membrane over the pit. Next, I'd line the pit with another membrane. Finally, I'd cause the inner membrane to separate from the retina, trapping a layer of fluid to form a lens.

As for "how" it began, I don't know. You would have to ask someone with extensive knowledge on that subject, but I don't think they could give you more than a cautious but competent guess.
For "what" started it, the answer could simply be the fundamental forces, driving a natural process. If the assumption is that it must have been something sentient, then there is plenty of colourful stories to choose from.

How did life begin, and then evolved. what started it?
Look at it as if you had to design an eye, how would you do it?

I am not exactly an eye-specialist, and would hardly know where to start, so I would probably do it the hard way of trial and error for a couple of hundred millions years. I would probably go for a wider wavelength range, like some perception in the infrared spectrum would be nice.
