Let's read Caesar's "Commentariorum De Bello Gallico" in Latin and learn about the Gallic Wars between Rome and Gual.

Where applicable, I will be linking to grammatical concepts which are covered more thoroughly by Magister Brent.

This first video was longer than 10 minutes, so I will post the second part shortly.

Note: I am not a Latin or history teacher or anything like that, I could make mistakes, so please take this series as a learning aide and a bit of entertainment. Refer to your own teachers and historical texts for hard facts.

  • @WilmmaPetrossy Then you know it's not pronounced like Italian. What is wrong with my "v"?

  • Good ^^ but you have to work on pronunciation as much I have to work with english xD

note that the Latin sounds are very similar to Italian .. so your e,i,v, etc are wrong ! ^^

    anyway u r very good ^^

  • @WilmmaPetrossy This is not MODERN ITALIAN PRONUNCIATION OF LATIN. This is the CLASSICAL PRONUNCIATION. Caesar, Cicero, and others of that era did not speak Latin like Italians do. I respect the pronunciation Italians use and that it's the preferred one used by your Pope and Church, but it is not what I am trying achieve in these videos. I am using the ancient pronunciation that would have been used by Caesar.

  • Celtae has not the english pronunciation. Use soft "c".

  • @sukhbaatar108 Hello! Thank you for watching my video, but your comment is incorrect. "Celtae" does indeed have a hard "c" sound. I am using Classical Latin pronounciation as it would have been spoken by Caesar.

The "soft" C did not exist until later when Classical pronounciation was replaced by Ecclesiastic Latin pronounciation as a standard set by the Catholic church based on modern Italian pronounciation and is taught in Italy.

Please, NO MORE POSTS ABOUT ECCLESIASTIC PRONUNCIATION!

  • hey:D

Caesar started his conquest into Gaul because of the sack of Rome in 390 B.C. by the Gauls. He used that as a casus belly, he told the people of rome that the barbarians could invade italy again if they werent conquered...^^ so he didnt just attack them because they were to the "north" of italy^^

  • @ElReyRemy You're right. This leads to the idea of Pax Romana ("Roman Peace"), creating peace at home by creating war on the border. This is relevant because some people often ask if we are currently in a time of Pax Americana.

My point here was to explain some of the geography as these ancient territories are not obvious to some. The barbarians were to the north, adjacent to Italy, making attacks possible. This would be the easiest route to expand. Provence would become Rome's first province.

  • You explain the map of Europe... so you assume that even idiots are watching your video about De Bello Gallico?

  • LOL "Germany = Deutschland - trust me"

Yea... "Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika" = United States of America - trust me!

  • All you smart nerds who argue about the "correct" pronounciation of Latin have wasted your time learning Latin. Maybe you can read Caesar, but you have understood nothing.

  • @joels341 i study ancient Latin ! <,<

  • Gratias tibi ago amice.

  • i forgot ... "ae" is "e" dont forgot it .P
