A film that documents the life of an extraordinary building on the Lower East Side of New York City. It was known to some as the Church of All Nations, to others as CUANDO, to still others as the Taoist Temple of the Ancestral Mother. The main character is the buildings last resident, a squatter and Taoist priest who is trying to cope with modern life in his rapidly changing neighborhood. The story begins when Sifu Jai receives word that the old Church of All Nations building is going to be demolished to make way for high-rise condos. Sifu Jais temple and home of fifteen years is a historic building that has fallen in to a state of beautiful abandonment and decay. Though its official address is 9 2nd Avenue, the hulking brick edifice with the distinctive caged roof is a creature of the Bowery, and its story is the story of that street, all turbulence and iconoclasm, in abbreviated form.

  • Just ran across this video and was in shock a bit because I lived in this building in 1968-69 while working part-time for rent in the Church of All Nations. Saw some pics of Joe (asst director) and heard Miss Burdick's name in some of the footage, but unfortunately couldn't see pics of the 4th floor where the bunch of us lived. Will have to dig out some pics and artwork showing parts of the building and post them here at some point. Trip down memory lane!

  • I remember when they sold the property across the street to Zeckendorf for $1.00. Community organizers wanted to make it into affordable housing. That was in 87 or so, but it took 15 years for them to kick everyone out. The middle class has been forced out of Manhattan. I left 20 years ago...
