Nice. As soon as I saw you were holding a Stelling, I thought, "This'll be good. Stellings are great banjos. They are bright and clear. What they lack in 'growl' will be an advantage in this song." And that's what it is. Good playing and singing. Super!

Blake - I've loved this song for years ... even put together a disc with more than 20 different versions. This is as good as just about anything I've got. And I agree about the banjo - excellent performance.
There are many covers on this version done completely different and nicely, though. Dean Martin, Paul Anka, ... but I still think (or guess) that the banjo is essential to carry the contents of the lyrics emotionally. This is certainly the best "private" cover on youtube.

What tuning is he using? Ive heard John Hartford play it in G, C and D tuning??

Im playing this in a C position capoed' out of A...... I think in johns later years he played in a standard g tuning but tuned way way down to a low E..... Therefore he also used a considerably thicker guage set of strings.... John was a rare bird Im sure he could have played that song in X flat if he took a notion....... Thanx for watching...
