the piston rings in the S-series motors tend to get carbon build, and stick. Synthetic oil is much more stable than conventional oil (or what most people seem to be putting in the s series motors), and cleans up carbon build up in a slow but safe (for the engine) way.
Seems like the circle of life for a saturn is; it burns oil because no one wants to spend a little bit more for good oil, and good oil would prevent that... heh.
I'm running 6k oil change intervals on mobil 1.

I am a proud owner of a Saturn SL2.. it' a 97 model and i've only had it a couple of months... beats any other car i have had... and with 230,000 miles on it i am exceedingly happy with it... It's has great gas milage... Though i did something i don't normally do... I switched to synthetic oil to try and help my engine last longer... and it runs even better now than before\

I crashed a 97 sc2 head on into a dodge ram at 45mph lol gotta give it to it, im still alive but the transaxle came through the firewall the back seat poped open and the sub hit me outta the trunk and i shattered my knee cap into 9 peices when the lower dash caved in. wash a great car and easy to fix until then though :)
