2000-05 models
FRONTAL OFFSET TEST

OVERALL EVALUATION: Acceptable
Structure/safety cage Injury measures Restraints/dummy kinematics
Head/neck Chest Leg/foot, left Leg/foot, right
Acceptable Good Good Good Poor Acceptable

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
Test details:

The Saturn L Series was introduced in the 2000 model year and discontinued after a limited number of 2005 models were manufactured.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. During rebound from the airbag, the dummy moved toward the driver door, and its head went partway through the open window. Then the head moved back in and hit the B-pillar and top of the door opening.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low.

the piston rings in the S-series motors tend to get carbon build, and stick. Synthetic oil is much more stable than conventional oil (or what most people seem to be putting in the s series motors), and cleans up carbon build up in a slow but safe (for the engine) way.

Seems like the circle of life for a saturn is; it burns oil because no one wants to spend a little bit more for good oil, and good oil would prevent that... heh.

I'm running 6k oil change intervals on mobil 1.

  • I am a proud owner of a Saturn SL2.. it' a 97 model and i've only had it a couple of months... beats any other car i have had... and with 230,000 miles on it i am exceedingly happy with it... It's has great gas milage... Though i did something i don't normally do... I switched to synthetic oil to try and help my engine last longer... and it runs even better now than before\

  • Looks pretty safe to me!

  • well i own a 2002 sl 5 speed thing is pretty sporty 4 a Saturn that was kinda interesting

  • yeah i have a custom 2000 saturn lw1 wagon in silver plumb and it still drives like its new!!!
